Why Do We Have Beagles?.....

Aubrey had some beagles and a basset hound growing up. Ever since our kids were very young, they enjoyed hunting the Redbones with Dad, but since they were so young, he thought they might enjoy hunting with beagles since they hunt during the daytime, and the kids can better watch them work. So, I went to work studying lines, pedigrees, and looking for something from good proven hunting lines, hunting parents, good conformation and temperament, and healthy with longevity. We purchased our first female for our son, and she started running rabbits on her own at 4 months old. We purchased her littermate sister for our daughter a few months later, and later on, we purchased a male of similar breeding. Our beagles come from the well know Branko hunting stock, as well as some other well known hare and cotton tail hounds.....World Champion Hurry Up Percy, Field Champion Green Baby Shooter, Field Champion Clear Creek Hoss, are among some of the more notable. We do not breed our females until they are around 3 years old, so we can fully evaluate their hunting traits, and mate them with a male that would best compliment them. We do not make a cross unless we plan to keep one, which is not real often. We have had a couple litters with our male, but have also went to a couple males outside our kennel to hopefully make the most successful crosses we can. If we intend to make a cross, we talk with other beagle breeders so we can get a feel for what bloodlines best compliment each other. Our beagles have excellent temperament, conformation, health, and trainability. Puppies from our females have went to both pet and hunting homes, with excellent reports back from all.

Beagle Advantages:

*Extremely friendly dogs

*Known to be good pets for children due to their good dispositions (they are on the Readers Digest Top 10 Breeds for Families with Children)

*Fairly minimal shedders, though they do shed more in the spring

*Crave human relationships

*Get along well with other dogs

*Very healthy compared to most pure breeds. Because beagles are often used in lab testing (due to their small size, good nature under even poor circumstances), a great deal is known about their health when compared to other breeds.

*Come in a variety of sizes, from 10" tall to 15" tall

*Hardy, and can live indoors or out in all seasons. If in cold climates, beagles should have insulated dog houses or a shelter (garage, barn, or enclosed dog house) that has something soft to curl up on away from wind and precipitation. Of course, they do appreciate climate control, though! :-)

Beagle Disadvantages

*Love to follow scents (rabbits especially), and get sidetracked easily

*Should be taught early to respond to "come."

*Prone to getting overweight if allowed to eat at will

*They don't bark often, but when they do, it is loud!

*Beagle puppies bark quite a lot right after weaning, and may bark for a few days in their new home when left alone.

*Beagles are probably not the best choice for a dog if you live in an apartment, work a lot of hours, and don't plan to go for a walk/run every day with your dog. A fenced in yard is ideal for a beagle.
